Delete your Matters account
This page explains how to have your Matters account and the data in it deleted, exactly what is erased, and what little is kept afterwards and why.
How to request deletion
- Fill in the form on the contact page with the address you use to sign in to Matters. Giving that address is how we know the request is yours.
- Pick Your data as the topic and write Delete my account. Nothing else is needed. No reason, no phone call.
- We delete the account and confirm by reply within 72 hours. If you have a Pro subscription it is cancelled at the same time and not billed again.
What is deleted
All of the following is erased from our servers permanently:
- Your account record: your email address and your name.
- Every task on your list, with its dates, notes and people.
- The synced copy of your list that lets your devices see the same thing.
- Your membership of any shared space, and any space where you are the only member.
- Access tokens for any connected Google account, which also ends Matters’ access to Gmail and Calendar immediately.
- Any unused sign-in codes.
The copy of your list held on your own devices is separate. Signing out wipes it, and deleting the app removes it with everything else the app stored.
What is kept, and for how long
- Payment records. If you ever paid for Pro, our payment provider keeps the record of that transaction for as long as tax and accounting law requires. Matters holds only a subscription reference against it. Neither we nor they hold your card number.
- Tasks in a shared space with other members. A space you leave carries on for the people still in it, so tasks you added there stay with the space. Delete those tasks before requesting deletion if you want them gone, or say so in your email and we will remove them.
- Encrypted backups.Deleted rows can persist briefly in our host’s routine encrypted backups before those roll off. Nothing is read from them except to recover from failure.
Raw captured text is never part of this, because it is never stored: it is read into a task and dropped in the same request.
Deleting some data without deleting your account
You do not have to delete your account to remove things from it. Deleting a task in the app removes it from our servers and every device within moments. Disconnecting a Google account in Settings deletes its tokens and ends that access at once. Signing out clears the list from the device you are holding.
